Call for Papers
Acting on Theory:
Representation, Performance, Politics
Papers are invited for a collection of essays, to be edited by Debby
Thompson, on intersections among theatre, performance, politics, cultural
studies, and critical theory. This collection arises out of a frustration
with the seeming paucity of dialogue among theatre workers, cultural
theorists, and political activists. At the same time, there is a dialogue
going on among these three groups that tends to get little focus (often
because it is looked on with suspicion by all three groups) and that
therefore needs to be spotlighted.
Papers may address questions such as:
* How can theatre artists and workers intervene into and refigure social
scripts and pre-scriptions?
* Are conceptions of race, gender, sexuality, and even class dramatic in
nature?
* How can/does theatre-acting, with all its risks and dangers and
pleasures, present a paradigm for social action?
* Can activism simultaneously effect social change and critically examine
representationality? (That is, what kinds of activism move beyond
positivist modes of representation effectively?)
* In what ways is Performance a productive site for Cultural Studies? In
what ways is Performance doing Cultural Studies?
* How do theatrical performances both participate in and interrogate
body-identity politics?
* How are both popular culture and theatre practice dealing with race in an
acting tradition embedded in racist history?
* How has Collective or Popular Theatre (in the Boalian sense) responded to
post-structuralist and post-Marxist theory?
