Call for papers for a special session at MLA 1999 in Chicago
*Musicality and Victorian Character*
This session encourages a variety of methodological approaches to consider
how Victorian "character," both exemplary and undesirable, in fiction,
non-fiction prose and poetry, is intimately related to the subject's
perceived musicality.
In what ways is a historically imagined Victorian "character" (or lack
thereof) constituted by notions of individual talent, discipline or taste in
relation to music? Does this result in either the inclusion or exclusion,
legitimacy or illegitimacy of the musical character or "type" within
normative cultural and discursive structures? How is the musical character
disfigured, queered, orientalized, fetishized, made foreign, or how is the
musical character assimilated into Victorian culture by the disciplining of
talent?
Papers are not limited to the set of questions above, and, while the set of
literary texts is historically specific, various theoretical approaches from
before, during and after the Victorian period are encouraged-- i.e. British
and Continental aesthetic and cultural philosophy of the 18th as well as
19th century (Burke, Hume, Kant, Rousseau, Hegel, Marx), contemporary
musicology and cultural studies, queer studies, post-colonial studies, etc.
