CALL FOR PAPERS:
theory@buffalo --an interdisciplinary journal of graduate student writing.

Special Topic: "The Practice of Theory: Questions on the Roles and Uses of
Theory in the Arts and Sciences".

The editors of theory@buffalo introduce the fifth issue and request
submissions on the theme: "The Practice of Theory: Questions on the Roles
and Uses of Theory in the Arts and Sciences". While we have envisioned
responses that address the theme construed in one of the two following ways,
we hope to be surprised with terms of engagement we have not anticipated.
The following suggestions are not intended to restrict responses to the
topic. This call for papers is open to all fields of study but limited to
graduate student writing.

One area of response could address our choice to couple Œtheoryš with
Œpracticeš. Addressing the debate about the distinction between theory and
practice, how such distinctions are made, and whether such a distinction is
formal or conventional still occupies scholars of many disciplines. This is
a classic debate about the politics of theory and praxis which finds a very
vocal, contemporary expression in the field of cultural studies, among many
others. For this issue then, we hope to provide a medium for the furtherance
of this debate by publishing essays which take Œtheoryš as material and
method or which discuss the relation of Œtheoryš and Œpracticeš in
provocative new ways.

A second area of response could explore the ways the sciences and humanities
interact, as they describe, enlighten, and shape our human experiences.
This connection is especially relevant today as we are faced with
sociocultural changes due to new discoveries and issues in forensics,
biomedical ethics, ecology, cyberspace, reproductive technology, genetic
engineering, and pharmaceutical treatments. With this in mind, we hope to
publish essays which debate the co-operation of contemporary theories of the
humanities with those of the sciences or which challenge this possibility.

DEADLINE: MARCH 1, 1999

SUBMISSIONS: Essays of 10,000 words or less in Microsoft Word format and
MLA style are welcomed. Please provide a coverpage with your name,
institution and a brief biographical statement. Do not include your name on
the pages of the essay as this will hinder the blind-review process. Essays
will be selected by peer-review. Please send submissions (no abstracts) on
disc or paper by March 1, 1999 to:
