Call for Papers for the 1999 American Literature Association Conference
Baltimore, May 27-30, 1999
Call for papers on the work of Frank J. Webb and/or other antebellum African
American authors who address issues of race, ethnicity or gender employing
sentimentalist rhetoric. What are the politics of sentimentalism in works like
Webb’s The Garies and Their Friends, Harriet Wilson’s Our Nig or Harriet
Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl? How does this rhetoric
intersect with contemporary politics, with slavery and abolition?
Abstracts (250 words) and a brief bio. must be received no later than January
28.
