CFP: Publics and Literary Texts (MLA 1999 in Chicago)

We seek papers that address the following questions: How do texts that
are considered "literary" reform, forge, submit to, or (supply your own
verb) publics? Where do theorists of publics leave off where literary
scholars should take up? Where do literary scholars leave off where
theorists of publics should take up? More broadly, what are the
heretofore underexamined relations between literary texts and publics,
and how may they be theorized? Proposals tackling these issues through
case studies are welcome.

Send 2-page abstracts by March 15 to Mary Grover or Gina Siesing,
Department of English, Par 108, University of Texas, Austin, TX 78712.
You may also send by email as an attachment: grover@mail.utexas.edu or
