1799: Endings and Beginnings
The Department of English at the University of Bristol is hosting the
Eighth One-Day Romantic Studies Conference on Saturday, 13 November 1999.
This conference is scheduled to take place near the end of the year, the
decade, the century and the millenium. This provides an appropriate
moment to consider the way in which the 1790s were regarded by those who
lived through them. In particular, contributors are encouraged to explore
the ways in which writers of this period were concerned with endings, with
new beginnings, with the formal challenges presented by the consciousness
of this phase in history, and with the anxieties generated by a fin de
siecle. Comparisons between the 1790s and other final decades or
years are invited. Papers on 1799 itself would be particularly welcome,
and should be scheduled to last for 20 minutes.
Proposals for papers on these or related topics to arrive, if possible,
by 29 October 1999. Please send to: Professor T Webb/Romantic
Correspondence, Department of English, University of Bristol, 3/5
Woodland Road, Bristol BS8 1TB. Phone: 0117 9287786. Fax: 0117
