CFP: Materialist Criticism/Canadian Literature (9/15; journal)

From: Imre Szeman (iszeman@duke.edu)
Date: Thu Jan 14 1999 - 11:37:34 EST

_Essays on Canadian Writing_ invites submission of manuscripts for a
special issue on materialist criticism, to be guest-edited by Imre
Szeman. The aim of this issue is to explore a variety of materialist
approaches to Canadian writing, including (but not limited to):
examinations of the social, historical, and economic conditions of
literary production and consumption in Canada; the changing function and
status of the "literary," both publically and institutionally; textual
analyses influenced by various marxisms, the sociology of culture,
sociocriticism, the work of Pierre Bourdieu, etc.; materialist feminisms;
the materiality of race and its significance for writing in Canada; and
critical and theoretical investigations of concepts such as class,
commodification, alienation, hegemony, dialectics, mediation, property,
the body, overdetermination, contradiction and ideology, as they relate
to production of literature and other forms of Canadian writing. Essays
addressing the reasons for the (relative) dearth of materialist
approaches to English-Canadian writing and the traditions of materialist
criticism in Quebec would also be welcome, as would attempts to revive or
recuperate earlier critics of Canadian writing as possible sources of a
uniquely Canadian materialist criticism.

The editor welcomes contributions from a wide variety of sources, and is
especially interested in receiving essays from Quebec and from
international critics of Canadian literature.

The final date for submission of papers will be September 15, 1999.
Submitted papers should be 7,000 to 10,000 words in length and in MLA
format. Contributions should be mailed to:
