CFP: EASTERN FANTASIES: MEMOIR, ROMANCE, AND
TRANSACTIONS OF IDENTITY IN MIRCEA ELIADE'S AND MAITREYI DEVI'S FICTION

                        (MLA panel, 1999 Chicago)

We are seeking 7.5-p. completed papers or 1-2-p. paper proposals on the
cross-cultural exchange between Mircea Eliade's novel MAITREYI and
Maitreyi Devi's response to Eliade, her romance IT NEVER DIES. Recently
reissued together by U of Chicago P, the two accounts of the authors'
fictive and not-so-fictive 1930 encounter in Calcutta call upon
literary and cultural critics to rethink larger notions of identity,
representation, crisis, and reconstruction thereof across national,
linguistic, and cultural boundaries.

Engaging both Eliade's narrative and Devi's reaction to it, our
approved session invites interventions from scholars working in
cultural and comparative studies, postcolonialism, and postcommunism.

Deadline for submissions: Mar. 10
