                Call for Papers for a Special Session
                at the 1999 MLA Convention in Chicago

"The Author as Spectacle: Visual Representation and Authorial Identity"

This session will examine the important role visual images have played in
the construction of authorial identity. Papers could address any number of
issues, including the ways various authors have been represented and
promoted through images on book jackets and other commercial and
promotional materials (e.g., announcements of readings, posters and
advertisements, newspaper and magazine features), as well the impact such
images have had on specific reading practices, on perceptions of an
individual author's identity, and on the profession of authorship more
generally. Obviously, presentations that incorporate visuals are
encouraged. Papers on authors from any literary period are welcome.
