The Medieval and Early Modern Student Organization of the Pacific
Fifth Annual Conference

"SECRETS, CONFESSIONS AND REVELATIONS"

Secrets, confessions and revelations permeate Medieval and Early
Modern experience. We are seeking one-page abstracts of proposals for the
Fifth Annual Interdisciplinary Conference of the Medieval and Early
Modern Students of the Pacific (MEMSOP). Possible topics include but are
not limited to the following:

-- Metaphors of things hidden and/or revealed.
-- The sacrament of confession in literature
-- the revelation of Christian history
-- secret societies and movements
-- the secret police/ spies/ undercover agents
-- censorship and veiling through writing
-- the secret as generic motif
-- the riddle as text
-- how the secret self constitutes identity
-- the soliloquy as personal revelation
-- the engendering of privacy
-- private manuscript culture in a public print society
-- persecution and hidden identities
-- revelations of secular history

Topics concerning any aspect of secrecy, confessions, or
revelations--sacred or secular--from the Medieval through the
Early Modern period are welcome.
All abstracts must be received by May 15, 1999.
