The co-chairs of the MELUS panel at the annual meeting of the Pacific
Ancient and Modern Language Association (PAMLA), which will be held 5-7
November at Portland State University in Oregon, invite proposals for this
year's panel, titled "Writing across Ethnicities." We seek papers that
expand our understanding of ethnicity in American literature in new and
provocative ways. For example, they might address pan-ethnicity or ethnic
hybridity, or compare works of different ethnic groups of the United
States. This idea is borne of the oft-stated objection that
multiculturalism emphasizes difference to the detriment of a cohesive
society. This panel demonstrates that recognition of difference does not
constitute a retreat from cross-cultural communication.
To submit a proposal, please send a summary of about two hundred words or
a completed paper of about eight to ten pages to be received by 15 March
1999 (firm deadline). Those who submit proposals or papers will be
notified by 10 April 1999.
Participants selected for this panel must join both MELUS
(http://duchess.lib.csufresno.edu/Multicultural/MELUS/) and PAMLA
(http://www.pamla.org), except that members of the Northeastern MLA
(NEMLA) may participate without joining PAMLA.
Further information, including the evolving status of the panel, will be
posted at:
