Please post this CFP for a forthcoming conference at the University of
Wales
Proposals and / or expressions of interest are invited for an
interdisciplinary conference addressing the cultural history, status and
representation of the early modern parliament, up to 1642.
Topics for papers might include parliamentary speeches and the models of
political rule which they present, the interaction of court and
parliament, the gender dynamics of the dealings of queens regnant with
parliament, legal developments, religious difference and conformity,
parliament and cultural production (commissioning, patronage, agency),
representations of parliament in literature and theatre (and vice
versa), the performance of politics, diplomatic correspondence,
political theorists such as Guicciardini, Bodin and Wilson, the
relationships between the English parliament, the Councils of the North
and Wales, and the Scottish and Irish parliaments, comparative models of
discourse in continental parliaments and represenatative assemblies such
as the Etats Generaux, the Staten Generaal and the Deutsche
Riechstagsakten, and political theorists such as Gucciardini, Bodin or
Wilson.
The conference will take place on Sept 25th and 26th at Gregynog, the
country house of the Federal University of Wales. Keynote speakers will
be Seth Lerer from Stanford and Andrew Thrush from the History of
Parliament Trust. The conference is sponsored by the University of
Wales and the Society for Renaissance Studies.
