CALL FOR PAPERS for a special session that has been accepted for
presentation at PAMLA's Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Assoc.,the
Pacific regional MLA) 1999 annual meeting. PAMLA's annual meeting will take
place at Portland State Univ.,Portland, Oregon, from November 5-7, 1999.

        Special Session: "Women, Race, and National Fictions"

This panel will examine how women writers construct fantasies of nationhood
in their work. It will simultaneously consider how discourses of gender are
inextricably bound up with systems of race and nationalism. I welcome
proposals on literatures of all origins, genres, and periods. Please send
two-page proposals AND a 50-word abstract by MARCH 15, 1999 to:
