Chester Himes and the 1950s

1999 MLA Convention

I am seeking proposals/papers on any aspect of the relationship between
Chester Himes and the 1950s. Potential topics could include: Himes' fiction
and Cold War politics/aesthetics, Himes' use of interracial sexuality as
trope/metaphor, Himes as parodist, Himes as expatriate, Himes as "protest
novelist," etc.
