UPDATE: CAUC/ASIANS: MIXED-RACE IN ASIAN AMERICA (3/15; 5/15)

The original call for papers did not include specific deadlines for
proposals and papers. In addition, some have inquired about the exclusive
focus on Caucasian ancestry in this collection. Please see ADDENDUM below:

Papers are sought for a proposed volume on literature by and about
Amerasians or Eurasians. While, race mixture between non-white groups and
Asians is an important area that deserves scholarly attention, the focus
of this collection is on Asian American writers with white or Caucasian
ancestry. Because American race history involves the notion of
hypodescent (that all descendants of "colored" people acquire the social
and racial status of their raced ancestors), the mixed-race identity of
part-whites invokes a different and often more ambivalent relationship
between both "sides" of one's background than for non-white mixes. (The
notion of passing as white is probably the most notable example.) For
Asians with Caucasian ancestry, this tension is often deeply felt but less
visible than for blacks with Caucasian ancestry.

Deadline for abstracts is March 15; for completed papers, May 15.
