December 2 and 3, 1999

First Announcement and Call for Papers

The theme of the Third English Culture Conference, organised in the Dept of
English of the University of Lisbon by the English Culture Studies Group
with the support of the Centre for English Studies, is Culture and
Citizenship. By proposing this theme, the English Culture Studies Group
seeks to create both the opportunity and the intellectual environment to
examine, review, and critically engage with positions and recent
developments in
        cultural studies
        cultural theory and history,
        feminist and women’s studies,
        theatre, film and media studies
        postcolonial studies,
        gender, ethnic and minority studies,
        educational and pedagogical theory, thought and practice(s)
        literary studies, linguistics and critical discourse analysis,
        sociology and philosophy,
(among other disciplines and fields) which analyse, explore and
re-articulate how citizenship was/is produced, represented, regulated,
consumed and identified with in the cultural processes, the public culture
and the public (cultural) sphere of modern and late modern (postmodern)
times, with a special focus on emergent community formation, experiences
and practices and a cultural politics of participatory, democratic
citizenship.
        Interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary contributions are welcome. The
papers called for are position papers (10-min presentations), 15-min papers
and 20-min presentations (the final decision on presentation times will be
made by the Conference organising committee). The Conference language is
English.

        The deadline for the submission of 200 to 300-word abstracts is June 30,
1999.
        The registration fee is E 19,95 or PTE 4,000 (cheques only, payable to
Teresa Malafaia). Participants and attendants from outside the Euro zone
can pay in PTE on arrival. The organising committee is also considering the
possibility of a conference dinner. Dinner is not included in the
registration fee.
