"The Cultural Work of Prison Writing"
Abstracts are being sought for a proposed session of the Midwest Modern
Language Association Convention to be held in Minneapolis on Nov. 4-6,
1999, on the "cultural work" of prison writing.
Session Description:
This session will attempt to assess the "cultural work" of prison
writing. Papers should consider questions such as the following: What
"good" is prison writing? What has it done in the past? What can it do
for writers or readers? Why should we teach prison writing?
Jane Tompkins's concept of cultural work allows us to focus on what
texts can do for their writers and to their readers. Applying this
concept to prison writing seems particularly fruitful. Readings of
individual texts or authors are encouraged as well as wider discussions
of the ramifications of prison writing. Preference will be given to
American writers, although all approaches will be considered.
