Call for Submission: Essays by Teachers of EFL
For an anthology, I am compiling a collection of personal essays about
the experience of teaching English as a Foreign Language in non-English
speaking countries. Essays can include aspects of travel that occurred
while teaching, but the central theme must connect to the experience of
being a teacher in another culture. (I am not interested in straight
travelogues). Essays may address such issues as aspects of the
classroom experiences, accounts of working with individual students or
specific classes, culture shock, professionalism, daily life,
comparison's to teaching in the teacher's home country, bureaucracy,
institutional politics, challenges and rewards.
Essays from all kinds of EFL teachers (present and former) are welcome:
university instructors, private language school instructors, high school
and elementary school teachers, volunteers, Peace Corps workers, private
tutors. I am hoping to gather as diverse a collection of narratives as
possible, representing a variety of countries and teaching experiences.
The purpose of this project is to give a voice to an often
under-recognized and diverse group of professionals.
Guidelines:
No fiction or poetry
Include an SASE if you would like your manuscript returned. Manuscripts
without an SASE for return will be recycled if they are not accepted for
publication.
Deadline: August 31, 1999
