----A one-day interdisciplinary conference on the representation of science and technology in science fiction and science 'fact' - and on the impact of new technologies of representation, from computer games and the internet to virtual realities and high-tech Hollywood.
How are science and technology depicted in contemporary culture? What kinds of hopes and fears surround us at the dawn of the new millennium? What is science fiction - and what are the fictions through which science and technology are sold to us in daily life? What are the implications of new media technologies for the process of representation itself? These and other related questions will be explored under the banner of 'Science Fictions', a title chosen to encourage a blurring of the boundaries between science 'facts' and 'fictions' and those between the study of texts and the technologies on which they depend.
Contributions are welcome from a range of fields within the arts and humanities, including film, TV, literature and cinema. Proposals for a 20 minute paper by April 30th 1999 to Dr. G. King, Brunel University, 300 St. Margaret's Rd., Twickenham, TW1 1PT. Email geoff.king@brunel.ac.uk Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
