CALL FOR PAPERS
PANEL ON EUDORA WELTY
TO BE OFFERED AT THE
SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF SOUTHERN LITERATURE CONFERENCE:
"THE SOUTH IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM"
APRIL 6-9, 2000, IN ORLANDO, FLORIDA
Panel name: "Eudora Welty's Less-Taught Stories"
As you are probably aware, a very limited number of Eudora Welty's
short stories appear in the literature anthologies many of us use for
our classes. "A Worn Path," "Death of a Traveling Salesman," "Why I
Live at the P.O.," and "Petrified Man" appear routinely, and a few
other stories (such as "Powerhouse" and "A Visit of Charity") are
chosen occasionally, as well. Many of Welty's stories, however,
particularly the later ones, are largely bypassed by publishers.
The Eudora Welty Society would like to encourage faculty and
publishers to expand the repertoire of Welty stories that are being
taught to undergraduate and graduate students by offering a panel
that features papers on some of her less-taught stories. These
papers might include explication, pedagogical suggestions,
theoretical aids--anything to encourage and support a wider
understanding of Welty's entire body of short fiction.
We are issuing, therefore, a call for papers on this and closely
related subjects to make up a panel we will offer at the SSSL
Conference in April 2000 in Orlando, Florida. Papers should be
able to be read in no more than twenty minutes.
Send your papers to Gail Mortimer

Deadline for receipt of papers is September 20, 1999.
