Third English Culture Conference
CULTURE AND CITIZENSHIP
December 2 and 3, 1999

Second Announcement and Call for Papers
The theme of the Third English Culture Conference, organised in the Dept of
English of the University of Lisbon by the English Culture Studies Group
with the support of the Centre for English Studies, is
CULTURE AND CITIZENSHIP.

Maureen Whitebrook (to be confirmed)
(as well as Portuguese sociologists and philosophers to be announced later)
The English Culture Studies Group seeks contributions (from a wide range of
disciplines and fields) which
(1) trace and analyse the complex and shifting relations of culture and
citizenship in modern and late modern times, especially from nation- and
national-culture-formation to globalisation and global culture production
and consumption
and
(2) explore and re-articulate citizenship and culture with a special focus
on new understandings of the relations between individuals/singularities
and societies, and on the conditions of emergence and possibility of new
experiences and practices of community and on a new cultural politics of
participatory democracy for the 21st century.
The papers called for are position papers (10-min presentations), 15-min
papers
and 20-min presentations (the final decision on presentation times will be
made by the Conference organising committee). The Conference languages are
English and Portuguese.
The deadline for the submission of 200 to 300-word abstracts is June 30, 1999.
The registration fee is Euro 19.95 or PTE (Portuguese Escudo) 4,000
(cheques only, payable to Teresa Malafaia). Participants and attendants
from outside the Euro zone can pay in PTE on arrival. The organising
committee is also considering the possibility of a conference dinner.
Dinner is not included in the
registration fee.
