ANATOMIES OF VIOLENCE: a postgrad-mortem

Conference date: 8 and 9 July, Thursday and Friday, 1999.

Conference location: University of Sydney.

Abstracts due: 1st May, 1999.

Jointly sponsored by PGARC (the Postgraduate Arts Research Centre)
and RIHSS (Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences)

ANATOMIES OF VIOLENCE seeks work by postgraduates that interrogates the
increasing interest in “violence” in our society, in the media, in
cultural criticism, and in the academy. This conference hopes to gather
together postgraduates from many different academic disciplines to
explore this provocative and volatile concept. We are particularly
interested in papers that theorise “violence”, contributing to the
growing debates surrounding violence and visual culture, politics,
philosophy, identity, literature and sexuality. It is anticipated that
an enlivening dialogue will be established between postgraduates and
early-career academics, who will be leading themed strands of panels
throughout the conference.

Suggested topics include:

*diagnostic violence *violent spectacles *trauma *media violence
*critical violence *murderous pathologies *objectifying gazes
*narratives of violent crime *queer bashing *sex and violence *bodies

in crisis *power and difference *the outraged body *ethics of
violence *seductive violence *sensation *thrills * crime fictions
*murdering to dissect *morbidity *sites of confinement
*rhetorical violence *textual violence *serial killers *punitive
measures *protest *true crime *nonviolence
