CALL FOR PAPERS
PLANTATIONS OF THE MIND:
MARKETING MYTHS AND MEMORIES IN
THE HERITAGE TOURISM INDUSTRY
A multi-disciplinary conference to be held at the College of Charleston
April 6-9, 2000.
The current boom in heritage tourism raises questions about the ways in
which the past is interpreted, and nowhere are the answers more elusive
than in former plantation regions. This conference defines four sets of
issues:
1. Visitor motivation: Why are so many people interested in
traveling to former plantations? What are they looking for? These
questions address the psychology of tourism and the cultural needs that are
met by the heritage industry.
2. Presentation and marketing of memory: What do plantations
symbolize today, what have they symbolized, and how are they represented?
What views of the past are being taught at historic plantation sites?
Whose history is represented and whose is left out? How do those who own
and control historic plantations make decisions on marketing and
presentation?
3. Reception and interpretation: What is actually being learned
at historic plantation sites? What underlies interpretation? What happens
at sites where memories are contested? What modes of inquiry and
representation are appropriate in investigating plantations as cultural
landscapes?
4. Impact: How are images and memories created or reinforced by
the heritage industry influencing the development of the landscape, the
regional economy, and public policy in general? Is this type of tourism
fostering cross-cultural learning and understanding?
Abstracts (500 words) on these themes are welcome and should be sent either
to Terence Bowers, Department of English, or to John Crotts, Department of
Management and Marketing, College of Charleston, 66 George St., Charleston
SC 29424. The review panel will also include Rosemary Brana-Shute
(History), Tom Heeney (Communication), Ralph Muldrow (Art History and
Historic Preservation), John Radford (Geography), and Randy Sparks
(History). Revised papers may be submitted for possible publication in a
book on the conference topic to be published by the University of South
Carolina Press or in a special issue of the International Journal of
Hospitality and Tourism Administration.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is October 1, 1999. To facilitate
planning, the organizers welcome early submissions and expressions of
interest.
