Complicities: Connections and Divisions

In this ninth biennial symposium on Asia Pacific Cultures & Literatures the
complicitous liaisons characterising the interactions between various
cultures within this region, and between nations in this region with those
outside, from the perspectives of literature, cultural studies, theatre,
language and history will be explored. The connections and divisions, which
characterise this relationship, can be approached from myriad angles.

Papers may address one or a combination of relevant themes in this area,
such as:

- The Nation - its ambiguities, borders and ideologies
- Retrospection & Introspection in any of the genres for the literary
cultures of
-he Asia-Pacific region
- Literary Hybridities- indigenization & exoticization, rewriting
literature;
revisionist texts
- Gender & Class- complicities between class, race, sex, and androgyny
- The Comprador & Coolie - relations between the powerful & the powerless
- Borders, Limits, & Liminal Space - landscapes, geographical spaces,
interstices
- The Before & the After - literature and nationalism, the literatures of
war,
historical explorations of interconnections
- Liaisons in Theatre - explorations of theatre- past & present, its roots
and links
- Social Metaphors - social texts and contexts; National identities at the
end of the century, New Beginnings
- Mind & Body - connections, divisions and borderlines
- The Virtual World - connections through the web; text in cyberspace;
multimedia texts

History of the Symposium

The first symposium in the series was held at the University of Western
Australia in 1982. Since then, the symposia have been held bi-annually at
The University of Western Australia and The National University of Singapore
alternately. The 1995 symposium was held at the Australian Defence Force
Academy in Canberra.

Publications

Selected papers from the symposia have been published in a series of
scholarly books many of which have come to be considered as pioneering texts
in this rapidly developing field. These include The Writer's Sense of the
Contemporary(1982), The Writer's Sense of the Past(1987), A Sense of
Exile(1988), Perceiving Other Worlds(1991), Myths, Heroes and Anti-heroes
(1992), and Crossing Cultures(1996).

This year, The Centre for the Arts, National University of Singapore will
publish
selected papers from the Symposium.

Each conference paper should have a delivery time of about 20minutes. Each
presentation will be followed by 10 minutes of discussion.
Panel sessions can be arranged if suitable proposals and suggested speakers
are submitted to the conference committee by 30 August 1999.

An Abstract of 250-300 words in length should be typed, double-spaced and
formatted to include the writer's name, his or her designation and
institution, and the title of the paper. Please indicate whether
audio-visual facilities are required before mailing all abstracts by 30
August, 1999.

Registration Fees
Before 30 July 1999: S$150.00 + S$4.50 (3% GST)
After 30 July 1999: S$180.00 + S$5.40 (3% GST)
Students: S$ 50.00+ S$ 1.50 (3% GST)

Overseas participants who are funded by their institutions do not have to
pay 3% GST. However, documentary proof must be produced at time of payment.

Expatriates working in Singapore are required to pay 3% GST.
