Representations of Irish Identity in Modern Irish Poetry

This panel is intended to explore the ways in which Irish Identity
is interpreted, codified, embraced and rejected in poetry by
Modern Irish poets. For eight hundred years Ireland has been a
contested site for political and economic identity, yet Irish literature,
music, and art very often display a fierce commitment to a social
or individual identity primarily defined by its "Irishness." In a
country forced to make so many changes, how has this
conceptualization of what it means to be Irish remained constant?
Then again. . . has it?

Papers may interpret the panel topic somewhat broadly,
but those which consider how Irish identity has specifically
changed in the 20th century and/or look ahead to changes
that may accompany the new millennium are especially welcome.

Deadline for submission of paper or 300 word abstract: July 15, 1999

email submissions (of abstracts only, please) are welcome
