THE PRESIDENCY IN FILM
Southwest Texas Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association
invites papers or panels treating any aspect of Images of American
Presidents on Film for its annual meeting to be held at the Sheraton Old Town
Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico, February 9-12, 2000.
Possible themes for papers/panels might include ,
but are not restricted to:
George Washington and Continental Congress as portrayed in Film
John Adams and John Quincy Adams as portrayed in Film
Thomas Jefferson as portrayed in Film - for example, Jefferson in Paris.
Andrew Jackson as portrayed in Film - for example, using films such as The
Buccaneer, The President's Lady, The First Texan et.al.
Abraham Lincoln as portrayed in Film - for example, Birth of a Nation, The
Littlest Rebel, Young Mr. Lincoln, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, Gore Vidal's
Lincoln. et. al.
Andrew Johnson as portrayed in Film - for example, Tennessee Johnson.
Ulysses S. Grant as portrayed in Film - for example, Sitting Bull
Theodore Roosevelt as portrayed in Film - for example,
The Wind and the Lion, The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt,
Rough Riders, et al
Woodrow Wilson as portrayed in Film - for example, Wilson.
Franklin Roosevelt as portrayed in Film - for example,
Stand up and Cheer, Sunrise at Campobello, Eleanor and Franklin, The Last
Bastion et al.
Harry Truman as portrayed in Film - for example, Truman, McArthur et al
John F. Kennedy as portrayed in Film - for example, PT 109, JFK,

Lyndon Johnson as portrayed in Film - for example, The Right Stuff,

Richard Nixon as portrayed in Film - for example, All The President's Men,

William Clinton as portrayed in Film - for example The War Room,
Contact, Wag the Dog.
Alternative papers/panels can address images of imaginary Presidents in such
films as the following:
Forrest Gump, Hot Shots:Part Deux, Joe and Ethel Turp call on the President,
Yankee Doodle Dandy, Popeye for President, Advise and Consent, Kisses for my
President, Dr.Strangelove, Fail Safe, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, The
President's Plane is Missing, First Family, Dave, The Pelican Brief, The
American President, Independence Day, Murder at 1600, Air Force One, Wag the
Dog, First Kid, Primary Colors
