HAWTHORNE SOCIETY MEETING. BOSTON, June 15-17, 2000. Celebrating the
sesquicentennial of the publication of The Scarlet Letter, the Hawthorne
Society invites papers on "New Views of The Scarlet Letter," and on
topics such as "Hawthorne and History," "Hawthorne and Colonial and/or
19th Century Boston," "American Manhood and Womanhood in Hawthorne,"
"Hawthorne and the Urban Subject," "Hawthorne and Publishing,"
"Hawthorne: New Biographical Perspectives." Proposals (750 words) for
talks no longer than 20 minutes should be sent by October (by mail) to
