Call for Papers
Panel Proposal
Deadline: June 22, 1999
"Mourning and Melancholia in the Caribbean"
This panel addresses forms of lamentation in Caribbean literature, culture,
and society. Does a particularly Caribbean form of mourning exist? In what
ways does the Caribbean function as a space in which to express mourning
and melancholia on the part of African diasporic as well as white cultures?
What in the history of the Caribbean might be conducive to longing? Is
there a connection between a desire for authenticity and melancholia?
We are equally interested in Francophone, Anglophone, and Hispanophone
perspectives.
