Call for Papers: Libertinism and the Emergence of Modern Gender and
Sexuality in the Long 18th Century

2000 ASECS Meeting
April 12-16, 2000
Philadelphia, PA

Michel Foucault argues that the libertine had a crucial place in the
delineation of modern gender and sexual identities. Influenced by his
work, a number of scholars have recently argued that the 18th century saw
the emergence of these identities in England. Other writers have taken
issue with this thesis, maintaining that many of these emergence models
link gender identity and sexual behavior too closely and therefore
oversimplify the influences that gave rise to modern notions of
femininity/masculinity and of heterosexuality/homosexuality.

This panel invites scholars to explicate further the role(s) of
libertinism in shaping the development of modern gender and sexual
identities during the long 18th century. Especially of interest are
papers that study relationships between libertinism and "modern"
constructions of masculinity, femininity, and sexual in specific works of
literature, history, or biography from any nationality. Papers do not
need to support or refute emergence models directly; essays that
indirectly contribute to this debate by discussing particular
relationships between libertinism and gender and/or sexuality are welcome.
