CALL FOR PAPERS
Making Social Class Visible
A Conference in the Humanities and Social Sciences
October 1-2, 1999
Metropolitan State University
700 East 7th Street
St. Paul, Minnesota
Over the last two decades, scholars in many disciplines have become
more attentive to ways that individual lives are shaped by race and gender.
Less attention has been given, however, to the impact of social class. That
situation is beginning to change as more researchers investigate the
construction and presentation of social class in American life. This fall,
the College of Arts and Sciences at Metropolitan State University will host
an interdisciplinary conference for scholars who wish to explore the
social-class dimensions of everyday life.
Scholars in the humanities and social sciences are invited to
submit proposals for papers considering how any aspect of U.S culture, past
or present, is linked to the lifeways or thoughtways of a particular social
class. Papers may explore how class-based "cultures" affect individual
lives, or they may consider the class dimensions of any text, object,
event, or phenomenon. We especially invite presentations focused on
working-class culture or presentations that point out the class
implications of "texts" (of all kinds) not usually considered as "classed."
We also invite presentations exploring how social class is sometimes
subsumed in discussions of race or gender. Joint, interactive or
multi-media presentations are welcome. Presentations should not exceed 20
minutes (10 typed, double-spaced pages). Submit one-page summary, plus
very short vita, by July 25, 1999 to
