DRIVE-IN HORRORS is a hardcover essay collection edited by Gary D.
Rhodes for release through McFarland and Company (Jefferson, NC) at the
end of 2000. Included essays, and thus the text as a whole, will
attempt to highlight various factors for which drive-in horror films of
the fifties, sixties, and early seventies should be re-examined. The
book is predicated on the assumption that, however aethestically poor
these films may be on some levels, they represent characteristics worthy
of study.

For example, drive-in horror films sometimes draw on literature for
narrative focus, which—given their low-budget and quickly-produced
status—can yield important discussions on the art of literary
adaptation. Drive-in horror films also offer gender representations
worthy of study. They explore various transgressive themes not often
addressed by other films of the era. They examine and often reject
cultural norms and moral codes of the period. They act as a cinematic
barometer of issues affecting US culture (e.g., nuclear capabilities,
fears of Communism). And, perhaps due to their limited budgets, they
often disavow traditional filmmaking and editing styles indicative of
the classical Hollywood paradigm.

DRIVE-IN HORRORS will include essays which explore their topics through
the lens of either a single film, or a group of films bearing some
commonality (e.g., similar director, similar narrative theme, etc.).

DRIVE-IN HORRORS will be a collection of academic and scholarly works,
attempting to situate its tone and intellectual pursuits between the
hypertheoretical and the overly-popular.
