Dear Colleagues,

The response to the first announcement has been very good, and in order to
balance those already submitted, we are especially interested now in
offers of more papers on Poland, the Baltic countries, Czech and Slovak
Republics, Hungary. But please note that proposals for papers on any
region of CEE are still welcome.

Best regards,

Ann Buckley

Copy of call for papers follows below:

IMS Intercongressional Symposium, Budapest, 23-28 August 2000

Sessions on Central and Eastern Europe

                        __The Past in the Present_

Proposals are invited for a session on Central and East European Music.
Papers should be no more than 30 minutes in length, with 10 minutes'
discussion following each presentation.

The sessions are open to historical musicologists, ethnomusicologists,
folklorists, anthropologists, sociologists, specialists in cultural
studies. We hope to achieve a representative interdisciplinary balance.

The main theme is __The Past in the Present__ - but please note, this is
broadly conceived, and can be applied to any 'present' regardless of
chronological period. Thus topics such as medievalism (or 'ancient' or
'early' music) in the 18th and 19th centuries are just as valid as, say,
the constructs of the rural peasant past at given points over the past 200
years, or reception histories of particular repertories (both 'classical'
and 'folk'). In other words, you may speak about any materials, under this
main theme.

In addition to the main theme, open proposals are also invited, and if the
response is sufficiently large, we shall apply to hold more than one
session.

Two other topics in which there seems to be quite some interest are:

1. historiography of music, thus, aspects of writing on the history of
music in CEE;

and

2. the West as 'other' in Central and East European musics.

Those who ive in non-hard currency regions, and who could not otherwise
attend the conference, are assured that the organisers will do their best
to raise travel grants. These grants can apply only to those whose papers
have been accepted in the official conference programme. So it is
necessary to submit your proposal first of all. If it is selected, then we
shall put your name on a list of delegates in need of a grant and submit
this to Budapest.

The programme committee for the CEE session(s) at IMS Budapest is as
follows:

Zdravko Blazekovic (New York)
Ann Buckley (Cambridge)
Paul Nixon Cambridge)
Zvanibor Pettan (Ljubljana)

Please submit your proposals as soon as possible to me, Ann Buckley
(address and other details below), but no later than 10 August. Although
this is the preferred deadline, if you are away at this time, you are
encouraged to make a late application as we may be able to accommodate
you.

On behalf of the organising committee, we look forward to receiving your
proposals.

        Best wishes,

        Ann Buckley
