CALL FOR PAPERS
Acts of Treason:
Orature and Performativity in North American Poetry 1850-2000
We are seeking contributions to an anthology that investigates diverse
aspects of poetry and performativity in North American poetry from
1850-2000. While all methodological and theoretical approaches are
welcome, we are particularly interested in essays that investigate how the
oratorical and/or performative dimensions of poetry work to undo the
naming and claiming of ethnic/sexual/racial/political/gender identities.
In this anthology, we hope to uncover the "treacherous" aspects of poetry
and poetic performances. In so doing, this book will try to rethink the
relationships between performativity, textuality, orality, and identity.
Possible topics may include but are not limited to:
-national poetry versus ethnic poetry
-the comparative aspects of different ethnic poetry in the United States,
Mexico, and Canada
-translation
-bi-/multilingualism
-North American "ethnics" and identity
-the performativity, orality, and/or textuality in "live" performances and
in written texts
-lyrical complications of "voice"
-the interconnections between nineteenth and twentieth century poetic
performances
-uses of poetic form that betray generic expectations
We are particularly interested in subaltern, dialect, noncanonical,
popular, translated, and multilingual poetry, and define North American to
include Mexican and Canadian poets. We also welcome contributions by
working poets. "Poetry" here is conceived in the broadest possible terms,
and we invite work on and in a wide variety of genres, modes, and styles.
