Call for Papers
"Silence and Expression: Histories of Permission and Censorship"

March 30 - April 2, 2000
Papers that address the strategies by which expression is facilitated or
restrained -- who speaks, sings, or paints, under what circumstances and
constraints, for which purpose(s) -- are invited for this interdisciplinary
conference.
Keynote speakers for the conference include: Ann Bergren, Department of
Classics at the University of California, Berkeley; Allen Frantzen,
Department of English, Loyola University, Chicago; Sander Gilman,
Distinguished Service Professor of Liberal Arts in Human Biology, University
of Chicago; Don Kulick, Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm
University; Greil Marcus, _Artforum International_; and Martha Woodmansee,
Department of English, Case Western Reserve University.
