Panel: Constructions of Identity in British America
The recent publication of _Through a Glass Darkly: Reflections on
Personal Identity in Early America_ suggests that there is still much work
to be done on the concept of identity when considered in the light of pre-
and post-Revolutionary America. Papers could examine ways that different
types of people construct their identity through the power structure
which infiltrates British America. Papers could also examine different
sources which are used to construct identity -- written texts, property,
etc. Of course, I would not be adverse to papers which address the idea
of the construction of "American" identity, or, say, Virginian identity
through the use of multiple texts by a variety of authors.
