SESSIONS SPONSORED BY THE LOLLARD SOCIETY
INTERNATIONAL MEDIEVAL CONGRESS AT LEEDS, UK, JULY 2000
1. Heresy and Apocalypticism
With the advent of the new millennium and in keeping with the Congress' =
Year 2000 theme on "Time and Eternity," this session will provide an =
opportunity to discuss various heretical movements and the treatment of =
apocalyptic and eschatological themes evidenced in the writings of these =
heresies. Papers could include the use of earlier apocalyptic literature (=
Joachim of Fiore and Hildegard of Bingen), the translations into the =
vernacular of St John's Apocalypse (and commentaries upon it), and general =
beliefs and ideas about the apocalypse held by Cathars, Albigensians, =
Beguines, Hussites, Lollards, etc.
2. Wycliffite Hermeneutics
In this session, there will be a particular focus on the scriptural =
exegesis of Wyclif, Wyclif's early followers, and the Lollards. Papers =
for this session could focus on the hermeneutics of Wyclif, his clerical =
and/or lay followers, connections or distinctions between vernacular, =
Latin, clerical, and lay hermeneutic practices, etc. Or papers could =
address questions such as: Do Wycliffites have a coherent and distinct =
theory about how to interpret texts and/or other visible signs? How do =
they develop and present their ideas on this topic, and what is their =
importance to Wycliffism?
3. Heresy and Lay Preaching
Continuing with the Lollard Society's aim to provide a forum for =
comparison between differing heretical movements, this session will =
examine the use of lay preachers, both men and women, in the spread of =
heterodoxy. Papers for this session could focus on trial evidence of lay =
preaching, general precepts on lay preaching, or specific groups of lay =
preachers such as Wyclif's "poor priests."
