Renaissance 2000: Redefining the Renaissance - Shakespeare and his
Contemporaries
This conference, facilitated by the Institute for the Study of English
in Africa, and to be held at Rhodes University in June 2000, will
explore the concept of the Renaissance in relation to Shakespeare and
his contemporaries in the early modern period. Papers treating
literary and theatrical relations will be especially welcome.
The conference will coincide with the National Arts Festival, and
offer delegates the opportunity to experience other Eastern Cape
treasures like the Shamwari Game Reserve.
Among those confirmed speakers are: Professor Johnathan Bate,
Liverpool University; Professor Meredith Skura, Rice University;
Professor Thomas Docherty, University of Kent at Canterbury.
Conference dates: 26, 27, 28 June 2000
Closing date for submission of papers: 31 March 2000
