CFP: Narrative and Cinema (9/25; NARRATIVE, 4/6-4/9)

From: Paul Young (paul.young@lcc.gatech.edu)
Date: Tue Aug 24 1999 - 16:17:08 EDT

Narrative: An International Conference
April 6-9, 2000
Sponsored by: Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Society
for the Study of Narrative Literature

Plenary Speakers: Johannes Fabian, Sander Gilman, Katherine Hayles,
Deborah McDowell, David Morris

Proposed Panel:
The Spaces Between: Systems and Disruptions of Cinematic Narrative
This panel will problematize contemporary theories of film narrative, and
suggest new paradigms for narrative analysis. I am especially interested
in proposals that resist such dichotomies as classical vs. non-classical
narrative, passive vs. active spectatorship, and affirmative vs. subversive
aesthetic forms. Instead, I hope to collect proposals that engage
theoretically and historically with slippages and gaps in:
-- historical narrative paradigms
-- particular films or genres
-- academic theories of narrative, especially applications of literary
narrative theory to film
and/or
-- historical accounts of narrative film's "development"

Please send 500 word abstracts and 1-page CVs to Paul Young (see address
below). Submissions must be postmarked by September 25, and cannot be
considered without the full package. Email proposals accepted only if the
files are sent as attachments.
