In connection with the inauguration of the first stage of its Scottish
Studies Centre, Simon Fraser University is hosting a conference entitled
"Culture, Community and Nation: Scotland at Home and Abroad" to be held
March 9-11 at Harbour Centre Campus, Vancouver, BC. Confirmed speakers
include: Miranda Burgess, Ted Cowan, Robert Crawford, Tom Devine, Ian
Duncan, Marjory Harper, Catherine Kerrigan, Paul Koroscil, Carol McGuirk,
Tom Nairn, Ken Simpson and Michael Vance. We are requesting submissions
for persons interested in participating in a panel discussion on "National
and Transnational Scottish Identity: Hollywood and Beyond." This panel will
examine a number of ways in which Scotland has been created and re-created
in the realm of culture, both by British audiences and abroad, since it
joined with England in 1707. How has Scotland served to challenge or
redefine what Benedict Anderson refers to as the imagined community of the
nation from the beginning of the eighteenth to the end of the twentieth
century? Papers should be approximately 1200-1500 words long and be
available for distribution in early January. Participants will summarize
the papers in 5-10 minutes for the panel before general discussion. Please
send 200-word proposals by Nov. 15 to: Leith Davis, Department of English,
Simon Fraser University, Burnaby BC, V5A 1S6. Email: leith@sfu.ca
