Call for Papers: Contemporary American Indian Poetry
A panel at the NEMLA 2000 Conference (Buffalo, NY; April 7-8, 2000)
Papers on any aspect of contemporary American Indian poetry (U.S. and
Canada), especially the work of new or lesser-studied poets, or new works
by established poets (e.g. Gregory Scofield, Luci Tapahonso, nila
northSun, Paula Gunn Allen, Simon Ortiz, Adrian Louis, Joy Harjo, John
Trudell, Scott Momaday, et al.)
Early--and important--critical studies such as Paula Gunn Allen's _The
Sacred Hoop_ drew attention to the work of American Indian poets. As
Allen has later noted, however, even these important texts did not lead to
the sustained critical attention this poetry deserves. This panel seeks
to provide a forum for reflection on and production of critical readings
of contemporary American Indian poetry. The session will focus on
questions such as the following: What defines today's American
Indian poetry (thematically, stylistically, etc.)? Why doesn't this
poetry receive more critical attention? How does work by contemporary
poets fit into (or disrupt) the larger traditions of American Indian
literature and/or American or Canadian literature?
Topics might include (but not be limited to): thematic and formal
innovations; new theoretical approaches; intertextuality and influence;
poetic activism; performance/poetry; identity issues; sexuality;
humor; oral tradition/poetic text; bilingual texts; and the politics of
publishing and criticism.
