Call for Papers:
American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ASECS) 31st Annual
Meeting
University of Pennsylvania, 12-16 April 2000
Topic: Women, Creativity and the French Revolution
This panel will aim to examine the circumstances (social, cultural, and
political) of women's success in the creative arts during the French
Revolution, and relate this success to debates about the status of
creative women. Were successful creative women considered exceptions to
their sex, or were they seen as part of an increasingly viable
collectivity? How did creative women situate themselves in relation to
emerging discourses that excluded women as a group from creativity; among
them, a repressive gender ideology and the discourse about romantic
genius.
I would welcome abstracts representing various disciplines, including art
history, musicology, history and literature.
The panel's format will be conventional, but papers will be circulated a
month before the conference (and hopefully I will get the participants'
permission to post their papers on a web-page) to allow participants to
draw on the connections between their papers. Depending on the make-up of
the panel, I may invite a respondent.
