Augustan Satire and Colonial America: Generic Continuities and >
Transformations >
The purpose of this seminar is to identify and describe characteristic
methods and styles of satire produced in Restoration and Early
Eighteenth-Century England and Ireland and to trace the reappearance and
transformation of these modes of satire in Colonial American writing.
Papers will make use of historical and theoretical approaches and can be
interdisciplinary, including literary, pictorial, and musical examples.
Each of four panelists will read a fifteen-minute paper after which
there will be audience questions and discussion. Panelists will
represent of diversity of academic disciplines, critical viewpoints, and
ideological orientations.
