CALL FOR PAPERS: Teaching, Literature and Environmental Literacy
This roundtable discussion is designed to further conversation among
interested NEMLA members regarding effective pedagogical links between the
teaching of literature and environmental literacy. As the field of
literature and environment has gained visibility and momentum in the academy
its practitioners have directed attention to the common problem of
environmental sustainability. The prospect for sustainability is indeed
correlated with democratic participation and civic responsibility; for, as
David Orr has suggested, there is little prospect "for building a
sustainable society without active, engaged, informed and competent
citizenry" (Ecological 84). Indeed, the rhetoric of literature and the
environment suggests that we teach students the responsibility of reflecting
on how their relationship to the environment has been constructed, and to
imagine how this relationship might be changed. Brief position papers that
address this or a related theme, at any level of the curriculum, are welcome.
