                       *** Millennial Animals***
Theorising and Understanding the Importance of Animals

University of Sheffield, England (29-30 July 2000)

Speakers: Carol Adams and others TBC

This conference provides a space for challenging understandings of the
beings against which humans are defined, as well as of that definition
itself. It comes in the context of (late) twentieth century ideas
which have radically altered the way `the human' is understood and
hierarchised in relation to other animals. Therefore, with a
multi-disciplinary approach, Millennial Animals will consider the
history and practice of representing animal lives and bodies in a wide
range of cultural forms, ranging from fiction and poetry to film,
scientific to philosophical discourse, psychoanalysis to religion,
consumption to politics, postmodern animal rights to vegetarian
identities.

We would be very pleased to receive abstracts, by 3rd March 2000, of
around 300 words on any of the above or other areas. We are equally
interested artistic contributions: paintings/films/poetry/video
installations/fiction etc.
