MILLENNIAL HOPES, HOOPS, AND HOOPLA: FUTUROLOGY, GUESSWORK AND THEORY ON THE
'INFOBAHN'. As part of the major ISSEI (International Society for the Study
of European Ideas) conference to be held August 14th-18th 2000 in Bergen,
Norway, a workshop is being organised on the above topic. Abstracts
for/Papers of about 20 minutes are invited on, among others, the following:
Derrida and Baudrillard at/and the millennium; William Mitchell's City of
Bits and its analogues; philosophy and ideology and the beginning (not the
end) of history; the failure of futurology; beyond Eurocentrism at 2000 (?).
This list is of course not exhaustive: the rather jocular title should be
used as a guide as to what fits. The working contention of the workshop is
that new media etc. allow history first now (erst jetzt) to be written; we
are at the beginning of history, in this sense (there is no other), not the
end.
