Rethinking the Avant-Garde: Between Politics and Aesthetics
April 14-15, 2000
University of Notre Dame

Call for Papers Deadline: November 30, 1999

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE:
Attempts to construct expansive theories of Modernism have
sometimes characterized the Avant-Garde as
either purely concerned with aesthetics-some Modernist
theorists have convicted it for being experimental for
experimentation's sake-OR as void of aesthetic content and
only concerned with political ramifications-certain
dismissals of Duchamp's work, for example, are animated by
charges of being merely anti-art (in a bad sense).
We are looking for papers that negotiate between politics
and aesthetics to provide a more nuanced
investigation of the role of the Avant-Garde in
re-evaluations of Modernism.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:
Martin Jay
Marjorie Perloff
Susan Rubin Suleiman
Krzysztof Ziarek

With responses from:
Gerald L. Bruns
Fred R. Dallmayr

SUGGESTED TOPICS:
While our focus will be on the historical Avant-Garde
movements indigenous to Modernism (Italian and Russian
Futurism, Constructivism, Dada, Imagism, Cubism, Vorticism,
Négritude, and Surrealism), we encourage
investigations that explode these boundaries, not only
between "schools" but also between the modern/
post-modern divide. Possible topics and approaches might
include:

    Women and/of the Avant-Garde
Aesthetic re-negotiations of Race, Class, and Gender
Intersections between High Modernism and the Avant-Garde
    Proletariat Literature vs. the Avant-Garde
    Marxism and vanguard art
    Post-structuralism and radical aesthetics
    Psychoanalysis and textuality
Hermeneutics and the work of art
    Philosophical encounters with the Avant-Garde
    Studies of individual writers/artists
