Little Europe and the Great Globe: Rethinking the Parameters of Medieval and
Early Modern Studies
Call for Papers
Conference Sponsored by the Department of English, Faculty of Arts and the
Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies of the University of Queensland
2-4 June 2000
Keynote Speaker: Professor Jean Howard (Columbia University)
Speakers are invited to offer papers at this interdisciplinary conference on
issues related to globalism, travel, communication, exploration, and
colonialism, and their effects on European societies, cultures, literature
and drama in the medieval and early modern periods.
Questions to be raised and discussed will include:
How might contemporary critical interest in globalism alter the paradigms
through we teach and think about medieval and early modern Europe?
Though we often study European history, culture and literature as if Europe
and its states were sealed entities, to what extent and in what ways is this
a partial understanding of medieval and early modern Europe?
What kind of active relationships to the rest of the world did Europe have
in these periods and what was the nature of those relationships?
What constituted "the globe" for medieval and early modern Europeans?
What kinds of material and imaginative contacts and interchanges occurred
between European states and the regions of Asia, Africa and the Americas?
In what ways did religious, feudal, and early capitalist practices condition
Europe's relationship to the rest of the world?
What are the most important theoretical paradigms for understanding the
global dimensions of medieval and early modern cultures?
200 word abstracts on these and related topics can be submitted to the
address below. Deadline for abstracts is 29 February 2000.
