CFP: Needlework and Resistance (10/21; NWSA, 6/14-6/18)

From: Karen Weekes (kweekes@arches.uga.edu)
Date: Thu Sep 30 1999 - 14:40:11 EDT

This is a call for papers for a panel we're proposing at the National
Women's Studies Assoc. Conference in Boston June 14-18,2000.

The title of the panel is "Stitching Up Subversion: Women's Needlecraft
as Resistance," and we're interested in papers that look at textile arts
in terms of their empowering, subversive, or political elements. You can
write about the works themselves or about representations of the works
and/or their creators; media coverage, or the use of needlework as a
trope in fiction/poetry/drama, are two of the many directions this panel
could take. We're interested in global or US perspectives, and any
historical period.

Please e-mail abstracts of 1/2 to 1 page in length to
kweekes@parallel.park.uga.edu, or mail to Karen Weekes, English Dept,
University of Georgia, 254 Park Hall, Athens, GA 30602. E-mail w/
questions as well, or you can phone at 706-542-1261. You can also fax
submissions to attn: Karen Weekes at 706-542-2181.

All submissions need to be RECEIVED by October 21 for consideration.

Thank you,
Karen Weekes, English Dept.
Marybeth Stalp, Sociology Dept.
