CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
for a new edited collection
Innovative Approaches to the Teaching of Technical Communication
Many theoretical and disciplinary perspectives can inform technical
communication theory, pedagogy, and practice, even though the field of
technical communication is just beginning to extend the range of
disciplinary perspectives from which it draws. Such interdisciplinary
extensions can encourage innovative approaches to teaching technical
communication, where "innovative" is defined as those theories, approaches,
or practices that tend to be undervalued or infrequently used in technical
communication.
Dickie Selfe, Karla Kitalong, and Tracy Bridgeford are seeking abstracts
for book chapters to complete a proposal for an edited collection that will
gather together innovative approaches to teaching technical communication.
With abstracts in hand, proposals will be submitted to publishers later
this fall. We envision at least three approaches to these essays: 1)
innovative ways to structure technical communication courses, course units,
assignments, or curricula; 2) innovative ways of conceiving and
representing technical communication, and 3) innovative theoretical
approaches that inform or have some application to the teaching of
technical communication. The essays that grow out of these abstracts should
be designed to address the needs of graduate students, teachers, program
directors, or administrators in technical communication programs.
Chapter topics might include:
-- Technology-rich Pedagogy in Technical Communication
-- Service Learning and Technical Communication
-- Technical Communication as Cultural Practice
-- Feminists Approaches to the Teaching of Technical Communication
-- Literary Applications in the Technical Communication Classroom
-- Postmodern Mapping in Information Design
-- Play Theory: Applications to Technical Communication pedagogy
-- Audiences and the Other in Technical Communication Analysis
We encourage you to correspond with the editors of this collection to
develop your chapter ideas. Email 500-word abstracts to Dr. Dickie Selfe
<rselfe@mtu.edu>, Dr. Karla Kitalong <kitalong@pegasus.cc.ucf.edu>, or
Tracy Bridgeford <tbbridge@mtu.edu> by October 10, 1999. We do not yet have
a contract for this book.
