             Challenging American Sociopolitical Hierarchy:
                       James Baldwin at Millennium

                               Heart's Day
                        Friday, February 11, 2000
                            Howard University
                             Washington, DC

The Department of English at Howard University announces a one-
day conference, culminating with a gala dinner, in celebration of
the works and achievements of James Arthur Baldwin. Now recognized
as a major figure in both the American and African American literary
canons, James Baldwin is best known as a novelist, essayist, dramatist,
and Civil Rights Movement activist. His works often precede contempor
-ary theoretical formulations in critical fields as diverse as gender
studies, gay studies and cultural studies.

Reassessing the achievement of James Baldwin at millennium, the
conference will focus upon all facets of the Baldwin's canon, as
well as the manner in which this author challenged and deconstruct
-ed American sociopolitical hierarchy. Proposals are invited on any
aspects of the works, politics and achievements of this author, includ
-ing (though not limited to) the following topics:

--The ideological achievements of James Baldwin:
     retrospective analysis of his role in the
     American and African American canons
--Homage to our literary hero: analyses of Baldwin's
     personal, cultural and literary impact
--Creative techniques and political enterprises:
     narratological, rhetorical, pedagogical and/or
     dramatic analyses
--Genre and authorship: Baldwin as dramatist,
     essayist, novelist, film critic, etc.
--Challenging American social hierarchy through
     the creative text
--Critiquing notions of masculinity, whiteness,
     Christianity, race, sexuality, homophobia, etc.
--Historicizing James Baldwin: The Civil Rights
     Movement and beyond
--Assessing critical treatment of James Baldwin by the
     literary establishment and by popular culture
--Teaching the works of James Baldwin, especially
     multimedial approaches

Presentations will be 15 minutes in length. Submit one page (250
word) abstracts on or before December 6, 1999, including in the
abstract a detailed plan for the presentation and any audiovisual
support needed. These may be addressed to Dr. Sandra Shannon or
Dr. Yasmin Y. DeGout and may be mailed, faxed or emailed to the
below addresses. Notifications will be mailed on or before
December 17, 1999.
